Two days before the regional elections scheduled for Sunday, May 17, in Andalusia, Vox leader Santiago Abascal has revived his 2019 proposal to build a concrete wall along the border with Morocco.

Speaking to the press on Friday in Malaga, Abascal said that «defending Spanish sovereignty over Ceuta and Melilla necessarily means building higher barriers». The far-right party leader argued that «Morocco is a neighboring country that defends its interests through force and underhanded means, notably by encouraging influxes of migrants and threatening Spain’s territorial integrity in Ceuta and Melilla».

Abascal also made the continuation of good relations with Rabat conditional on «adopting a firm stance toward Morocco and an unwavering defense of Spanish national sovereignty».

Vox has not merely revived its anti-Morocco demands. The party has also chosen to hold some of its campaign rallies near Moroccan diplomatic missions. As in November 2021, the far-right party held a public meeting outside the Moroccan consulate in Algeciras on Wednesday, May 13.

Opinion polls, for their part, broadly agree in projecting an absolute majority for the People's Party, which has governed the autonomous region of Andalusia since January 19, 2019.
