The Swedish government is among the principal donors supporting populations living in the Tindouf camps, according to a report by the Swedish Parliament reviewed by Yabiladi.
In 2025, Sweden, through the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), allocated 10 million Swedish kronor (€922,679.50) to the international NGO Oxfam to support Sahrawi populations residing in the camps in Algeria.
Sweden is also one of the largest contributors to the core funding of UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, the World Food Programme (WFP) and UNICEF, all of which operate in the Tindouf camps, the report notes.
Despite these substantial contributions from Sweden and other donor countries and international organizations, the Polisario continues to call for additional humanitarian assistance, warning of the effects of malnutrition on children, women and the elderly.
Humanitarian aid intended for the camp populations is received and distributed exclusively by the Polisario authorities, while UN agencies and international NGOs are excluded from the distribution process.
The parliamentary report also states that Sida allocated 310,000 Swedish kronor (€28,617.36) in 2025 to support freedom of expression in the Sahara. According to the document, the funding has notably enabled media outlets close to the Polisario and operating in Laayoune, Dakhla and Es-Semara to continue their activities.
