The president of the International Human Rights Network (RIDH), Jadyetu Mahmoud, has denounced the sexual violence she says she suffered and reiterated her accusations against Polisario Front leader Brahim Ghali. Speaking at a recent conference held at the Swiss Press Club in Geneva, the activist condemned what she described as the impunity surrounding violations of the rights of women in vulnerable situations.
Mahmoud called on «international organizations, United Nations mechanisms and human rights defenders» to conduct an independent investigation into allegations of sexual violence. The conference brought together human rights defenders, lawyers, academics and diplomatic representatives.
In her remarks, the RIDH president stressed that «the fight against violence against women is not solely about [her] personal story», reaffirming her commitment to «the dignity, protection and fundamental rights of women».
Her lawyer, Manuel Navarro, who also serves as RIDH director, described sexual violence as «one of the gravest forms of human rights abuse» and emphasized the importance of ensuring victims have access to justice.
Also speaking at the event, Ramón Muñoz Castro, adviser to Colombia’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva, highlighted the need for prevention efforts and support for victims through «cooperation between states, international organizations and civil society».
For his part, human rights expert Professor Yves Raidelet underscored the universal principles of protection and stressed the importance of preserving memory as a means of preventing such violations.
The conference concluded with a call for greater international mobilization and «stronger support for human rights defenders engaged in this fight».
