Reporters Without Borders (RSF) welcomed the release of journalist Ali Lmrabet on Wednesday, after he was detained at Tangier Airport on July 12 upon his arrival from Spain. The organization said it would continue to closely monitor the investigation announced by the public prosecutor's office.
Oussama Bouagila, head of RSF's North Africa bureau, said Lmrabet's release and the return of his equipment were a positive development, but stressed that this «should not make us forget that the investigation opened against him is still ongoing, and that the charges related to 'publishing digital content deemed to contain defamation of individuals and institutions,' which are linked to his journalistic work, have not yet been dropped». He added that the organization would remain vigilant and called on the Moroccan authorities to close the case once and for all.
RSF also quoted Lmrabet as saying: «I only practice journalism; I do not engage in politics. I do not belong to any party or ideological current. I practice journalism that respects internationally recognized professional standards, and I have never been convicted of defamation, insult or harming individuals, whether in France, Spain or Morocco».
«It seems that my practice of independent journalism bothers certain circles within state institutions or security agencies. But it is my profession and my livelihood, and I do nothing other than professional journalistic work», Lmrabet added.
