The High Commission for planning (HCP) announced in a survey published recently that Morocco’s population will reach 43.6 million inhabitants by 2050 indicating that the number of senior citizens will attain 23.2 % of total population.

The statistical institution has made an updated version of population projection in Morocco based on new international standards. The study suggests that the country’s population will know an additional growth of 272.000 inhabitants per year which could be compared to the population of a small city like Taza.

Recent numbers also indicate that the demographic growth is precisely urban pointing out that this is partly because of rural migration and the urbanization of rural areas. The 2017 updates shows that Moroccan cities are home to 73,6% of the country’s population compared to 2014 when it was only 60.3%.

Active population aged between 15 and 59 will increase reaching 25.6 million in 2050 while the number of people aged between 18 and 24 will grow to 4.5 million in 2023 and then decrease in 2050 attaining 3.8 million.
