Turkey grants citizenship to a Moroccan killed during the defeated coup attempt

The Turkish government is granting citizenship to a Moroccan national who was shot by putschists in Turkey during the defeated coup attempt that took place in July 2016, Anadolu news agency reports.

This citizenship will allow the family of Jaouad Merroune, a 32-year-old tourist guide who took to streets last July in Istanbul, protesting against the coup attempt, to benefit from «tuition-free education and interest-free housing loan».

«government officials in Ankara, who asked not to be named due to restrictions on speaking to media, stated that Merroune would be granted the Turkish citizenship to allow his family to benefit from the martyrdom rights in Turkey», the same source points out.

Merroune's family is already, according to Anadulo, receiving a monthly payment granted by the Turkish government «as part of its martyrdom rights as they do not have to be Turkish citizen».

On July the 15th 2016, an alleged coup d'etat was attempted in Turkey against the state institutions. The Attempt was carried out by the Turkish Armed Forces and failed later on. 300 hundred people were killed that night and 2,100 were injured.
