Khalid Belfken, a Moroccan illegal immigrant was granted a 40, 000 pounds (around 500 000 dirham) for being «locked up too long». In an article published by the Daily Mail online newspaper, the British media platform reports that Belfken who has a quite heavy criminal record will be compensated for the time he spent detained.
The Home Office, a ministerial department of the queen’s government of the United Kingdom, responsible for immigration, security and law and order will have to award «substantial damages for unlawful detention».
According to the same source, the 27-year-old Moroccan arrived to the UK illegally only when he was 15 in 2005. He then quickly engaged in criminal attempts. The young immigrant reportedly committed 40 offences that included «possessing offensive weapons and twice attacking police officers». Belfken was jailed four times by a British court and managed to get back on track once released.
An atrocious criminal background
It is apparently not the first time that Belfken receives such a reward. In 2013, the British high court considered his fourth period of detention an unlawful one granting him a compensation payout. Moreover, «the Home Secretary conceded that part of the most recent detention was unlawful because throughout the period from September 7, 2016 to May 3, 2017 there was no realistic prospect of his removal from the UK within a reasonable period», reports the Daily Mail. Despite the 40 offences, Belfken was caught red-handed recently sneaking into people’s home and trying to steal their belongings.
As he managed to enter the UK illegally, London’s High Court issued a deportation order in 2008 against Belfeken for being a foreign criminal. After six attempts, the Home Office failed to deport the criminal to Morocco as the authorities there «refused to provide travel documents or take him back». The latter argued that «there was at the time no realistic prospect of him being deported».
The Moroccan national is reportedly described as «atrocious» as he was spoted carrying weapons. And that the chances of him returning to jail for the same charges are «extremely high».
