Japanese electric and electronics equipment company Furukawa has opened a new plant in the Tangier Automotive City (TAC) through its subsidiary Optical Fiber Solutions (OFS). The inauguration of the new factory took place, Wednesday, and was attended by Minister of Industry, Investment, Trade and Digital Economy Moulay Hafid Elalamy, and Furukaza’s Executive Vice President Takahide Kimura.

«The opening of this plant meets the needs and strong demand for optical fiber cables and is part of the firm’s development strategy, which aims to increase its production capacity by 20% in 2018», says Optical Fiber Solutions in a communiqué sent Wednesday to Yabiladi.

The new unit is built on a 31,000 m² land and required a 200-million dirham investment. It will create 200 job opportunities. «To help transfer skills and shareexpertise, employees have been trained in the United States, Latin America and Germany», said the same source.

«Furukawa is launching in Tangier a pioneering activity in the continent», said Elalamy. «The plant will meet a growing demand for broadband connectivity at both the national and continental levels and will contribute to the accelerated development of digital technologies and services in Africa», he added.

The Furukawa Electric Group began operations in 1884 with the establishment of its copper smelter and cable manufacturing plant.
