After Morocco arrested two members of a terror cell on Friday, an investigation revealed that the two men were planning to assassinate senior officials and bomb tourist destinations, including the Jemaa El Fna square in Marrakesh.

According to the Monday edition of Arabic-language daily Assabah, quoted by Le 360, they «targeted senior national security officials and were plotting terror attacks, using guns and chemicals».

The suspects are believed to be «influential members of a cell close to ISIS», said the same source.

On Friday, the Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ) arrested, on the basis of accurate information provided by the Directorate General for National Territory Surveillance (DGST), in Inzegane and Ait Melloul, two alleged supporters of «ISIS» over suspicion of preparing terrorist projects in Morocco.

According to the preliminary findings of the investigation, the two suspects, aged 18 and 25, one ex-convict under the anti-terrorist law and the other a student at the faculty of Sharia (Islamic Law), had links with other terrorist elements, arrested in July 2018 in Fez and Safi, with whom they were coordinating to obtain firearms they intended to use to commit terrorist operations against sensitive targets in the Kingdom, said the BCIJ in a statement.
