Moroccan judge Mustapha El Baaj was elected on Tuesday by the United Nations General Assembly to the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals, mandated to perform a number of essential functions previously carried out by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY).
This election, the result of a diplomatic campaign and mobilization among all United Nations member States, is the culmination of seven rounds of voting, the last of which was held on Tuesday.
The election was very close considering the nominations of ten judges from European, American, African and Asian countries to fill two seats.
Judge Mustapha El Baaj was elected for a two-year term to the Mechanism. His election is a new recognition of Morocco's important role on the international scene and of the Kingdom's efforts to promote the values of justice and respect for international law. It is also a UN acknowledgment of the credibility and professionalism of Moroccan judges.
This is the first time that Morocco has been elected to this major judicial body.
Counselor at the Rabat Court of Cassation (Criminal Chamber) since September 2013, Mustapha El Baaj has 22 years' experience as a criminal judge. He has also held the position of Deputy public prosecutor.
A Doctor of Law, El Baaj is the author of several publications and legal articles.
