Tired of the stereotypes associated with Muslim women in the West, feminist author Mariam Khan compiled the essays of 17 Muslim women to tell their stories, reports Reuters.

Her book, entitled «It’s Not About the Burqa», released Thursday at Main Market, brings together activists, journalists and researchers, mostly British, who wrote personal stories about their mental health, sexual identity, divorce, feminism and the hijab.

«Burqa is the most politicized word around Muslim women», Khan told the Thomson Reuters Foundation on Wednesday.

«Burqa and hijab are the first things many people think of in the West when they think of Muslim women - that is not a problem, but there is so much more to a Muslim woman than the clothes she wears ... I want to diversify their stories.»

In her book, the 26th author explains how «white feminism» does not fit with Muslim women’s choices and faith.

«For some feminists in the West they see (the hijab) as oppressive - but for people like me who wear it - I am not oppressed», she concluded.
