On the occasion of Throne Day, king Mohammed VI granted his pardon to 4,764 people, some in prison and others on bail, sentenced by the different Moroccan courts, said on Monday a statement by the Justice Ministry.
The detained beneficiaries of the pardon are 4,600 and are divided into : 1,916 inmates who benefited from pardon over their remaining prison terms, 2,477 prisoners who had their sentences reduced, the sentences for 31 convicts were commuted from death penalty to life imprisonment and 176 inmates who had their prison sentences commuted from life imprisonment to fixed prison terms.
The beneficiaries of the pardon whom are on bail are 164 and are divided into : 50 prisoners who benefited from pardon over their remaining prison terms, 12 inmates who benefited from pardon over their imprisonment terms while their fines were maintained, 2 inmates who benefited from pardon over their prison terms and fines as well and 100 prisoners who had their fines annulled.
The royal pardon included a number of prisoners for humanitarian reasons, notably people with incurable and serious diseases or with severe disabilities, the elderly, minors, pregnant women or women with kids, as well as those holding certificates and having received training to encourage them to integrate into society as active individuals after having shown good behavior while in prison.
The King agreed to grant his pardon to the detainees in the events of Al Hoceima, as well as detainees in terrorism cases who took part in the 4th edition of the Reconciliation Program (Mussalaha).
