Morocco repatriates 108 Moroccans from Canary Islands

108 Moroccan tourists, including 5 babies, stranded in Spain because of the coronavirus health crisis have been repatriated, Monday, from Gran Canaria on a flight to the southern Moroccan city of Laayoune.

This operation, initiated by the Consulate General of Morocco in Las Palmas and the Embassy of the Kingdom in Madrid in coordination with the Spanish authorities, benefited in particular to people suffering from health problems or chronic diseases, as well as the elderly, tourists in precarious situations and minor children.

Speaking to Moroccan News Agency (MAP), the Kingdom's General Consul in Las Palmas, Ahmed Moussa, said the operation was carried out «in a satisfactory manner» with the cooperation of the competent Spanish authorities and in coordination with the Embassy of Morocco in Madrid.

«The total number of beneficiaries of this operation is 108, including 5 babies and a minor», the Moroccan diplomat pointed out, adding that the majority of beneficiaries are from the southern provinces of the Kingdom.

The Moroccan government has paid for all the costs related to the implementation of the repatriation program of Moroccans stranded abroad, including those of the Canary Islands, he said.

The Moroccan authorities will also pay all costs related to housing and COVID-19 testing, in strict compliance with the health protocol in force during the lockdown period of these beneficiaries in Morocco, he added.

On this occasion, the beneficiaries welcomed this operation which, they said, took place in good conditions and commended the efforts made by the crisis unit set up by the Consulate of the Kingdom in Las Palmas.
