Being a member of an economic organization the size of ECOWAS requires time, and therefore a lot of patience. This is what Morocco is learning, in its own way, by appointing a panel of heads of state to decide on the implications of its integration into the regional grouping.
Jeune Afrique has released Morocco’s membership impact study on the ECOWAS organization. The document mainly reminded head of states that the kingdom is already present in the region through its investments, banks, exports and imports. If accepted as a member of the regional organization, Morocco will bring its experience in maintaining peace and security fighting against terrorist groups. However, the step is still raising cencerns in the region.
As the ECOWAS organization has promised to study Morocco’s admission through «a report that investigates the impacts of this step», Rabat is still positive about its chances to join the Economic Community. In Abuja, Morocco’s allies in the West African organization have taken the lead. Details.
In Nigeria, Morocco’s opponents continue campaigning against its admission to ECOWAS. Nevertheless, the kingdom now has the support of one of the most influential figures in the country : the Emir of Kano, a follower of the Tariqa Tijania and a former governor of the Nigerian Central Bank.
Last March, the President of the ECOWAS Commission played the role of a doomsayer, saying that Morocco’s bid to join the regional organization would be a step backward in the history of the organization. This Tuesday in Rabat, Marcel De Souza completely changed his opinion to the point that he even announced that the Kingdom’s admission to the Economic Community of West African States will be formalized on December the 16th in Lome, Togo at the next summit.
