Moroccan movies SUCK !

They suck in what way? we seem to forget that Cinema in Morocco is still emerging from the darkness. In fact, we hardly ever had an industry when other nations like Tunisia and Algeria were making movies that won best picture awards in international festivals such as Cannes etc...

There is a new generation of young directors, producers and actors who graduated from good schools of Cinema abroad and who have now come back to Morocco to start offering local products and in my opinion they are not doing bad. I have watched some of these films and I was impressed at the quality of the picture, artistically we can't fault them and they also portray the reality in Morocco and tackle social issues that common people in Morroco would find it hard to understand if they were tackled as news or political deabtes etc. The only thing which I think they can make better is to reduce the number of explicit sexual scenes as there is no need for them really and it makes it impossible to watch films while sitting with family.

that's what i was talking about : watching a moroccan film with your family ! sex and sexual issues is what these films are all about, i swear to God i prefer to watch one American movie than a Moroccan one, at least what we hear is "smoother" than what Moroccans use in their "idioms" and scripts: a girl/boy relationship that ends with pregnancy then a scandal, a whore who behaves when she's surrounded by her family while she sells her body once she goes out to college etc ... plus one important thing i always wanted to have it clarified : why most Moroccan movies are jammed with french language as if they're supposed to be watched by some frenchies living in Morocco or something, some movies are 90°/° french or french subtitled, why not english or any other language? why are we still living in frenchies' "jellabah" goddamit ! some recently shot movies look like they were shot in the 70s or with a 60s camera ..what's good about these pictures ? i'll stick with my first saying : Moroccan movies S.U.C.K !!!!

I get your point and respect it but I don’t agree on all what you said. These movies (and quite a lot have been made since the nineties) do not focus only on sexual issues and relationships and the few ones that do portray exactly the reality of what’s happening in Morocco. Movies like “Casablanca by night” might be shocking to the viewers but they open the window on a reality that a lot of Moroccans refuse to see, ghettos and neighborhoods where prostitution and teenager’s exploitation are the main resource of some people. Would you expect a politican to talk about these issues? Never. I’ve also watched Marok and although I didn’t particularly like it, thought that it was quite faithful to a reality of rich adolescents in Casablanca who go to French and American schools and become torn between 2 cultures and identities in their own country. But there are also comedies which reflect the Moroccan sense of humor and some period movies such as “Kayd nssa” which I enjoyed very much. I am not saying we have a top industry but I think we have the potential to produce good films which represent us in international festivals and personally I’d rather watch an average Moroccan movie that deals with issues familiar to me than some American trash about Muslim terrorists and apocalypses that only Americans can save the world from.
As for the French subtitles, I think this is because Moroccan movies are likely to appeal to a Francophile audience more than an Anglophile one especially when it comes to selections for awards etc..you’re more likely to see a Moroccan movie in les Cesars than the Oscars or the Baftas!!

Hello,
Babel is an American movie partially shot in Morocco, in America what this movie did is that it gave a worse image of Morocco and made some stupid asses think that there is a risk of being attacked or being victim of terrorism if visiting it. On the other hand, it had a clear message to show and make Americans aware of their way of interpreting simple acts into dangerous ones, but only some wise got that side of the movie, unfortunatly.
I liked the story of the Japanese girl smiling smiley

Cranberry, I was just trying to be sarcastic. The scene of the Moroccan masterbating was shocking so did the Japenese girl showing her hairy thing...
I watched the movie with some Canadian friends and to tell you the truth I felt embarassed with the image of Morocco on the movie...me who were speaking to them about the splendid riyads in Marakech and the twin in canasa etc

well I was embarressed to see the image that the movie Babel gave about morocco, I think we all agree about that, and it seems like I am not the only one who is defending and braging about morocco in the front of all my american and canadian friends. but I have to disagree with the any body who is cretisizzing the moroccan movies, they are really really doing a good job, and much more realistic about the subjects they are imposing in these movies they are all taking from real life and from the society talking about it in an open mind with the viewrs. the people are watching these movies are moroccans and live all of these circumstances on daily basis. so what is the problem with sexual issues, and sex scenes... we all live these kind of things. don't pretend to be an angel and don't do or live these kind of thingsm be honest with urself then the others first. and stop the hypocracy...yet u come to say I would rather to watch an american movie...that's a personal preference has nothing to do with the movie quality or subjets...but don't u find urself contradecting urself about the sex and the sexual subjects, unless if u r watching jesus movie or some type of cartoon...with all of my respect to ur opinion and ur freedom of expression. I just want to think about what i ve said...please respect those who are proud of morocco and the moroccan prodcuts and defending their country through their daily life like daily embassadors to give a good image for u and many like u around the world. and for some like me who haven't seeing morocco for many years, it adds so much joy and happiness to my soul and heart when i see any thing has to do with morocco on youtube or on tv or this website. simply because i found out how deep my love for morocco because being in the ghorba for 15 years.

Well, it is very easy to criticize the beginning of anything. Minnie pointed out that Moroccan cinema is at its' early stages or just crawling and still managed to deliver some very good films. The language problem I agree we are Moroccans not French. remind you some actors have studied the cinematography in Belgium and France or Canada others in America.
My favorite Maroccan actor is Saïd Taghmaoui the star of “hideous kinki” he has others equally good films but not with the lovely British kate Winslet. Thanks a lot for the films I will look at them later on; it’s a good subject.

AssalamoAlaikom,

i do agree with your point of view Minniemouse but i don't share your perspective when you said That the only thing which you think they can make better is to reduce the number of explicit sexual scenes.... i wonder can't we tackled whatever issue in our society without using explicit sexual scenes at all? regardless it's Halal or Haram, i think it's immoral and not convenient to watch these kind of movies with our parents, brothers, sisters etc.....hence,i do believe that this kind of scenes should not only be reduced but erased. as i said in a previous post, no need to show me two persons of opposite sex on the bed flirting each other in order to pass me the message they 're making adultry. showing them entering a bed room together can resume the whole scene.

thanks

I don't with any body who would call moroccans are slaves or dogs and fellowers to france, that's a big insult and a real moroccan wouldn't say that himself we and the rest. about the french issue, yes we are frenchies but guess what, that's something we all should be proud of and thankful to our precious and mother home country MOROCCO. part of human nature that we don't appreciate the things given to us with no hard efforts and we just take them for granted. I mean LOOK around at the people that don't even speak one language, yah u better believe there are some people can't even speak their mother language, or those people that speak a useless language meaning not an international language and could be used for the world communication like english, frensh, spanish and arabic the most important languages in the whole entire world, and alhmadolilah we as moroccans we have this precious gift that we are able to speak all of them most of us at least is trilingual or bilingual. look at the arabic nations that we used to think that the english for them as a second language but we come te realize they are zero/100 in english and if they speak few words still broken grammar or very hard time spelling, look at how many nationalities immigrate to quebec how much they struglle to learn tow to three words per year how much happy they are when they can, and once u say I am moroccan they go like oh lucky you u can speak rfrensh...look what kind of impression or jalousy we get from people when u say we are a bilingual country arabic and english and some more amazigh. so to conclude my point of view frensh is a big asset for us and we should thank god for it, because nobody can even come closer to us in the whole arabic world when it comes to intellegence and language skills which leads for us the success for communication with the world and successful socialism....another thing we do have a lot of moroccans abroad third or fourth generation that don't understand or comprehend moroccan dialect like france germany...canada even if u might think our community is newer and also the international viewers we have in morocco...and the moroccan jewish community that speak fluent moroccan but it is still so many local things that go by each city and region and the new termonology that is changing day after...that I myself can't keep up with...at least when it is transtlated to a steady language u get the content...thank u for ur attn

Thanks for ur comments friends, about d last post "3ashe-almaghreb" i do agree with u, we r a bit lucky to talk at least two usefull language specially frensh an english but all of us know that's bcoz of d french an english protectorate, one of d positive things they let was d knowledge of differente cultures included languages, but i would prefer getting this valuable things through our efforts than getting them that way, in d other hands, responding to Mr "vvvTTTvvv00" , u got to be ashamed calling moroccans dogs and slaves,we believe that our culture and education system belongs too much to d french ones, let's say imitators, but u exaggerate a bit.

dear friend. problum is not the language but the filthy french culture we muslums moroccans adapt and pass onto our society and children. i dont care if we can speeks frensh english or spanich. but i hates when i see us moroccons immitating like western tourists at our beaches and resorts.let me ask u a question my friend.lets say one day you have a daugther.would you let her go to beaches wearing a bikini?considering you are a moslum..........?
3
3 May 2008 07:52
to respond to your question brother vvvtttvv00. as this is a different subject going out to the beaches, with a bikini in personal point of view it is a personal choise, not the I would go to the beach naked "in a bikini" because my religion and my morality wouldn't let me do that, simply because my body is a very precious thing, and why should I let thousands of people see it for free, women creature is a very beautiful thing and like a very high end of fine art...even the west see that way I pesonnally have interacted with a lot of western families and people I was raised in this culture basically in an american envirment in an american house with an american family, you know what I found out long time ago, that we thing back home is totally different and the wrong image about them, good christians are conservative and tey honor dressing properly without showing too much skin, more specific nothing to get the attention or attract it, and to ansewr the specif question brother I would let my dauther do that...simply because I will raise my daughter with the values that my mother and father has given me, do my best, at the end of that it is a mother of hidayat allah and his blessing, If I will get lucky I will that well behaved daughter, because no mother what would u do you can't prevent the risk of having your children dispointing you, in conclusion it is a matter of hydiate rabena. let's free the west from our guilt and mistakes. and the influence that we have from the frensh has a good impact in our society...let's not blame them from what is going on in our country...from a personal experience again I was raised in the west and when I used to go to morocco i was always shocked by girls behavior my age, and even the new comers just few yrs recently and the would expect to be cool and more open than them, when i surprise them with reject too a lot of things they wanted me to do with them, they tell me oh "relax come on u were raised in the west u should more open minded" what kind of open minded they are talking? in here or in morocco, so let's not blame the frensh infulence, or even if we immitate them it should be done withing the best of it, keeping our own culture and boundaries...and brother white shark we can be a muslim country and even if our women population 100% muhajabate, that should stop us from speaking other languages, frensh/english/spanish at the end it is a method of 3elm and like the say " etloubo el3lm mena almahde ela la7de" and in order for us to discover other cultures we gotta have the main key with is the language that would open that wide door for us. in conculsion I would say that the things are going very wrong in our country is a personal choise from our own people, due to the circumstances they live in...and why should we suffer and put stong efforts to learn if we have being lucky and this kind of thing was given to us easy and we should thank god for. first I answered for the frensh subtitles and the quality of the movies and production then we got far away from that to other things everything goes wrong we blame it on the frensh colony come on we all should take a moment and see the positive side of it.

I know my time is waisted, because u will net even undertand me neither u will understand the good moroccan man and women who are acheiving high degress abroad and big shot position...while u carry so much jeoulousy toward this men and women because at the bottom line u find urself u r nobody. nothing but a hateful and an awkward person full of complexes and deprive and a hypocrate that's trying to pretend and a sheekh sale7 and angel gabriel...while everyone see u as an evil!!!!

by the way just to point out something to you guys, the success of the moroccan movies, I am so proud of them congratats to all of those who worked on these movies actors, actresses, scenarists, producers, and film makers behin the camera, also as much that gives big joy and happiness to see how is life and how is country improving, and also these movies romana o bortal, 3ouica deouiba...the historical granma stories, My husband and I we are in love with them and it giving a lot of information to those who know about morocco and love the moroccan and intersted to even learn more and more, since my husband is kuwaiti and everyday he picks up some moroccan words even his family, eventually they got moroccanized especially with the movies help. even his mom and brothers talk moroccan now, and when we meet moroccans they don't beleive he is not moroccan. this achievment made so proud, to make people now learn our dialect and speak not just understand, instead of us always making the (tm)efforts to speak someone's language. et the end of this I would like to thank everybody and to send out this message to be proud of their production, and not to forget also those who posted these movies smiling smiley(tm)

hi Shelby, I read and i RESPECT WHAT YOU SAID, BUT I don't agree with what you said.
Moroccan movies are based on true meaning of what really is going on in there. whatever you saw that is their regular daily basses. we should be thankful for what we saw, because no so many countries show the truth in their movies.
