I have an interesting job opportunity (in IT) based in London, my family (my wife, my two children and me) will have to relocate from Paris to London.

Everybody say to me that London is very expensive : the rent's flat is very expensive, the school for children is very expensive, the doctor is very expensive, ...nevertheless I really want to do it and seize the opportunity

My question is about the salary to ask : what is the minimum budget required to live normally in London for a familly composed of 4 people ? 40000 Pounds/year ? 50000 Pounds/year ?

Doctor is free on NH but the rest is expensive

In Paris, the rate for the same job is 60000-65000 Euros/Year.

I think what you should ask for is the prevailing wage meaning what are similar jobs paying in London? since it is there that you will be working and living.

Real estate and housing is very expensive in London. Me too i am preparing my relocation to Edinburgh Scotland with is a lot less expensive compared to London in terms of cost of living.

just enter you base salary (65000£) your tax code which should be arround 888L for you as you are father of two and married.
you should end up having a take-home monthly salary of 3791£ or 5570euros. This is a net salary that you can spend as you like and there's no more tax to pay.
Consider renting a 3 bedroom (T4) flat for no less than 1500 euros.

Personally I would only move back to London if I will be living in 10 Downing street. to answer your original question IT workers are making in the region of of 50k that is in pounds. if you are new to the field you should be about 40K. Best areas are very very expensive hough. London is not a place to bring up children and have a wife. try live out side London and commute to the city.

Chelmsford, Hertfordshire, Watford, Ilford, Corydon, south End etc, generally speaking the surrounding of London is cheaper and better quality. Cambridge is nice but is at the same level as London.

This gives you a confort in dealing with your health care, you pay nothing out of your pocket and the service is very rapid and quality. Your familly won't be covered. I think you have to have a some professional assistance regarding the terms of your contract. Make sure you negotiotiate every tinny detail before you sign. Especially when your familly is coming with you. Make sure you have a private insurance for medical covers. Your family must be included in it from day 1 you enter UK. Your employer has to pay for it. The insurance have to cover you in your free time as well. Not only on working hours. That will usually save you NI taxes. I myself came to UK on contract with a foreign company. I would be happy to give you some feed back if you want. I also know a good consulting firm that looks at that kind of contracts and provide assistance for a fee, which is fair compared with the assistance you get.

Salam Alaikum,

1) To be honest, London is far better than Paris, beleive me...

2) If the job offers a secure contract in all regards, go for it ;

3) Don't start calculate your take home pay with a suggestive tax code "888L", leave that for the Tax Office and bear in mind that unless you have a National Insurance Number, you'll be considered under an "emergency tax code" for 2/3 weeks if they're quick ;

4) Don't start worrying about medical matters, think how to act, do one thing at a time :

a) leave your wife and kids back home for a start (until summer school holiday leave) ;

b) find a flat (2 bedroom is OK, you have only 2 kids) in the Borough of Camden, close to Euston if possible ;

c) in Jully kids'll be on holiday, settle down your family in London, find a school at your ease, teach your wife how to move (the best way for that is a map and the bus), they'll have plenty of time to get used to their new environment before september ;

d) get registered with a local Doctor, you'll receive an NHS card, that's just in case... you can still buy a private medical insurance if you need to...

5) Now, if you have a flat in Camden, that's just minutes away from Euston station. And remember, Paris is just 2 hours and 40 min away... You still have the option of using the French medical system with your carte Vitale, if ever you needed to...

6) Apart from accommodation, London is not that expensive to live in. Food is very affordable (buy fruits and vegetables in markets, meat at halal Moroccan or Algerian butchers' and there are many many special offers on coffees, drinks, chocolates, pastas, etc... at Tesco's, Asda's and other supermakets all around London... You will even be able to import your car from Japan for less than half the price than a similar one in the UK...

7) Don't miss this opportunity (for the welfare of your kids, especially if you have a daughter : schools in France ban the Hijab, British schools don't...).

The reason why I'm suggesting Camden is it is close to Euston station Eurostar terminal. It is more convenient for you and your family to be able to get home quick when coming from Paris. Beleive me, I know what I'm talking about, taxis are so expensive and public transport are a hassle with kiddies. Forget about Wembley, that's Middlessex, North West London, very far from central London. Ok, there's the tube or bus, but how many times will you be able to go for real shopping with your family (food stuff;..) at Ladbroke Grove where most Moroccan shops are based ? Also, Camden is not that far from Hampstead, just minutes away... You can do that with your salary, ask your firm to help you with, if they relly need you, they will help you. Don't throw your children in Wembley, think SECURITY for them, you'll be fine.
And there are plenty of schools in the area you will live in. Plus, if you choose a public school, you won't have to pay. It is still affordable to live in Camden. Camden is a bit "special", not like Kensington or Westminster areas. If you fear the Congestion Charge, don't buy a car, or leave it parked...

What about school, there is any good public school in the area ?

Camden town is ok,I personally would go for st Johns Wood area if you just you want that level. I have a brother living with his family in Hilindon schools in that borough are much better.
