The national police, in coordination with the Customs services at the Guerguerate border crossing, south of the city of Dakhla, thwarted an attempt to smuggle two tonnes and 86 kilograms of chira on board an international transportation truck heading for an African country.

Border control procedures and search operations led to the seizure of the drug concealed in a cargo of frozen fish, which was on board the trailer of the Morocco-registered truck, said a statement from the national police (DGSN), adding that the investigation led to the arrest of the driver of the vehicle aged 52.

The total quantity of the illegal substance was handed over to the Customs Administration, while the suspect will undergo the investigation carried out by the competent police services, under the supervision of the public prosecution, the same source said.

This operation is part of the intensive and continuous efforts made by the various Moroccan police services to fight against the phenomenon of international drug trafficking, concluded the DGSN.
