The Port of Tangier Med experienced a year of exceptional growth in 2023, boasting a 13.4% increase in cargo volume that reached 8.6 million TEUs. This remarkable achievement surpassed 95% of the port's normal capacity and even fulfilled projected goals four years ahead of schedule.
Strong performance across terminals fueled this success, with Maersk-APM's TC1 and TC4 terminals playing a leading role. Additionally, the newly operational TC3 terminal, managed by Tanger Alliance, significantly contributed to the growth, shows the annual report of the Moroccan port.
Productivity records were shattered, exceeding 800,000 TEUs (Twenty-foot equivalent unit) handled in peak months. Further strengthening the positive trend, TIR truck traffic witnessed a 4.1% rise to 477,993 trucks.
The port handled 122 million tonnes of goods in 2023
The automotive industry played a significant role in the port's prosperity, with new vehicle exports surging by 21% to reach 578,446 units. This growth was primarily driven by Renault and Stellantis factories located in Morocco.
Liquid and solid bulk traffic also experienced positive developments, increasing by 6% and 44% respectively. In total, the port complex handled an impressive 122 million tonnes of goods in 2023, representing more than half of the national port tonnage.
Tanger Med's global recognition was solidified by its remarkable ranking of 4th in the World Bank's container port performance index. This achievement firmly establishes the port as a regional leader and a major player in the maritime industry.
Looking ahead, the Port of Tangier Med aims to leverage its 2023 success to further solidify its position as a key logistics hub for both Morocco and the Euro-Mediterranean region.
