In a hard-fought battle at the Geoffroy-Guichard Stadium in Saint-Étienne on Wednesday, July 24, Morocco won over Argentina 2-1 in its opening Olympic Games (JO 2024) group stage match.

Both of Morocco's goals were scored by Soufiane Rahimi, with the first (45’+2’) coming with an assist from Bilal El Khannouss.

As for the second goal (50’), it was scored on a penalty obtained by Ilias Akhomach.

On the Argentine side, Giuliano Simeone netted their goal in the 68th minute. The Albiceleste thought they had snatched an equalizer deep in stoppage time (90’+15’) with Cristian Medina scoring after a flurry of attempts. Moroccan fans on social media erupted in outrage, calling it a «theft».

Just as the final whistle seemed imminent, the referee halted the game for a VAR check. The stadium was evacuated due to disturbances. Upon resumption, the VAR check overturned the goal. Morocco thus maintained their advantage in the remaining minutes of play.

This result allows the Atlas Lions to pocket three points and take the lead in Group B. The next matches for the national team are scheduled for July 27 against Ukraine in Saint-Etienne, and July 30 against Iraq in Nice.
