A new Moroccan Honorary Consulate has been established in Gioia Tauro, Calabria, southern Italy. On Thursday, a delegation from the Moroccan Honorary Consulate, led by Consul Domenico Naccari, and officials from the municipality of Gioia Tauro, led by Mayor Simona Scarcella, met at the new premises of the diplomatic mission.
The prestigious Palazzo Sant'Ippolito has been designated to house the Moroccan Honorary Consulate, following the signing of Resolution No. 122 of 2024, which grants the Moroccan representation use of the premises. The meeting also included the signing of an agreement outlining the terms of this arrangement.
With this establishment, approximately 15,000 Moroccans residing in Calabria will now have a dedicated point of contact in Gioia Tauro. The Honorary Consulate will be the first foreign diplomatic mission with jurisdiction over the entire Calabria region.
Mayor Scarcella has described this initiative as «historic», emphasizing that it will create a direct link between the municipality of Gioia Tauro, its port, and Morocco.
The inauguration of the consulate is scheduled for November 30 and will welcome several distinguished guests, including the Moroccan Ambassador, the Undersecretary of the Interior, the President of the Court of Appeal of Reggio Calabria, and other notable figures.
