Morocco continues to lead the global race toward carbon neutrality, climbing to 8th place in the 2025 Climate Performance Index (CCPI), unveiled on Wednesday at the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Recognized as a regional leader in sustainable development and greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction, Morocco maintains its prominent position in this ranking, according to CCPI experts.
In the report accompanying the 2025 ranking, the experts highlighted Morocco’s prioritization of sustainable development, evidenced by its commitment to achieving 52% renewable energy in its national energy mix by 2030 and its significant progress in solar and wind power projects.
Leading the African continent and the Arab world in this ranking, which is topped by Denmark in 4th place (with the first three positions left vacant), Morocco has risen one spot compared to the 2024 edition. It outperforms several key players in decarbonization, including Germany (16th), Norway (9th), and Sweden (11th).
The CCPI, which evaluates countries based on four criteria—greenhouse gas emissions, renewable energy, energy use, and climate policy—is an independent tool that assesses the climate change performance of 63 countries, including individual EU member states and the EU as a whole (27 countries).
