The preliminary criminal chamber specializing in financial crimes in Rabat has sentenced a bank executive, employed at a branch in Ksar el-Kebir, to two years in prison. The sentence follows his embezzlement of customer funds, which he gambled away through a sports betting company, resulting in the loss of the balances.

The court ordered the defendant to return the embezzled amount of 910.000 dirhams to the affected bank, along with compensation of 100.000 for damages. Additionally, a financial penalty of 20.000 dirhams was imposed in favor of the state treasury, according to Assabah newspaper.

The defendant confessed to using customer funds for gambling, but the court acquitted him of the charge of squandering. He was convicted instead of embezzling public funds, altering data in the information system, and forging documents. He was arrested after a complaint from the banking institution, where internal investigations uncovered manipulations involving more than 900.000 dirhams.
