The President of the United States hosted an Iftar on Thursday evening to honor the ambassadors of Islamic countries accredited to Washington, as announced by the White House on X. During his speech, Donald Trump reaffirmed his commitment to advancing the Abraham Accords, which he initiated in 2020 during his first term.
«We’re keeping our promises to the Muslim community. My administration is engaged in relentless diplomacy to forge lasting peace in the Middle East, building on the historic Abraham Accords... While I’m president, I will be there for you'», he assured the Muslim diplomats present.
The Abraham Accords facilitated the normalization of relations between Israel and four Arab countries: the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco, and Sudan. As part of this agreement, the United States recognized Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara. However, with Trump's departure from the White House, this process faced challenges, particularly with Joe Biden's arrival as president in January 2021 and the election of a far-right government in Tel Aviv on December 29, 2022.
The Moroccan ambassador to Washington, Youssef Amrani, attended the Iftar organized by Donald Trump. «A meaningful moment of dialogue and recognition of the contributions of Muslim Americans», the Moroccan diplomat remarked on X.
