Spain has denied reports claiming it removed its flag from the islets facing Alhucemas Rock, namely El Barre (Land) and El Bahar (Sea). «This information is incorrect, as there have been no fabric or metal flags on these islets for over twenty years», the Ministry of Defense clarified on Monday in a statement to Spanish media.

The ministry explained that «metal structures are installed on raised cement or concrete platforms, painted in the colors of the national flag. These serve a symbolic purpose and mark a visible presence in the area. Due to weather, the marine environment, and local wildlife, the platforms require regular maintenance, which can sometimes temporarily affect the visibility of the colors. However, that is not currently the case».

Led by Minister Margarita Robles, the Defense Ministry affirmed that «no national symbols have been removed recently, nor has there been any change in the status of these islets».

The statement was issued to dispel speculation sparked by recent Moroccan media reports alleging Spain had taken down its flag from the two islets. The story was quickly picked up by right-wing Spanish outlets, amplifying the controversy.

Meanwhile, the Vox parliamentary group submitted a written question on Monday, August 4, calling on Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s government to clarify the situation.
