The Polisario Front has voiced its dissatisfaction with the tepid backing from Spanish political parties for its cause. Despite the involvement of political entities such as Sumar, the Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC), the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV), Bildu, and the Galician Nationalist Bloc in both the Spanish and European Parliaments, the separatist movement feels its expectations remain unmet.
This «disappointment» was publicly voiced by the Polisario's representative in Madrid, Khadijetou El Mokhtar, during a meeting in the Spanish capital on Sunday. She criticized both the ruling parties, PSOE and the People's Party (PP), alongside other political forces, lamenting that «they have never united to demand the self-determination of the Sahrawi people.»
El Mokhtar stressed that «the responsibility of right-wing, left-wing, and centrist parties towards the Sahrawi people has never been acknowledged.» She further asserted: «As long as political parties do not act on this issue and fail to support solutions that respect the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination, Morocco will continue to confront us, resisting on all fronts, not just militarily.»
The Spanish business sector was not spared from her criticism. The Polisario representative denounced Spanish business interests, accusing them of placing «economic interests above international legality, European justice, and human rights.»
Despite Khadijetou El Mokhtar's remarks, the Polisario has historically enjoyed steadfast support and leniency from several Spanish parties, regardless of whether they are in power or opposition. This is highlighted by the silence of these groups concerning the hundreds of Spanish nationals, including military personnel, killed by Polisario militias in the 1970s and 1980s. To date, no parliamentary or judicial inquiry has been initiated into these incidents.
