Unlicensed tour guide arrested in Marrakech over tourist extortion and assault

Police in Marrakech's Old Medina security district arrested a man with a criminal record on Monday on suspicion of extorting a foreign tourist and assaulting him after the visitor refused to pay for an unauthorized guided tour.

The arrest came after authorities reviewed a video posted by the tourist, in which he alleged that the suspect had demanded money under the pretext of guiding him through the old medina before physically attacking him when he refused to pay the requested amount.

Police identified and arrested the suspect in one of the old medina's alleyways. He was placed in police custody pending an investigation by the judicial police under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor's office to establish the full circumstances of the case and determine all criminal acts attributed to him.
