During a UN Security Council meeting on Monday evening, the Trump administration reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s autonomy plan to resolve the Western Sahara issue, first presented in 2007.

«On Western Sahara, the U.S.-penned resolution adopted in October resulted in the Council voicing strong support for negotiations to reach a mutually acceptable resolution based on Morocco’s credible and realistic Autonomy Proposal», said Ambassador Tammy Bruce, Deputy Representative of the U.S. Mission to the United Nations, during a debate on international law.

Bruce’s statement came shortly after the Trump administration dismissed the idea of a referendum on self-determination or independence for Western Sahara, options put forward last week by a Polisario Front delegation during a visit to Washington.

Meanwhile, Massad Boulos, Special Adviser to President Trump on African and Arab affairs, arrived in Algiers on Monday night. On Tuesday, he held successive meetings with Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf and President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. According to Algerian authorities, the Western Sahara issue was on the agenda of these discussions.
