The scene left audiences in disbelief. On January 14th, during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final where Senegal triumphed over Morocco with a 1-0 win in extra time, an unusual altercation over a seemingly trivial towel stole the spotlight. At the heart of this unexpected drama was Yehvann Diouf, who found himself defending Édouard Mendy's towel against a group of ball boys, even being briefly dragged to the ground. Moroccan players, including Ismaël Saibari, were also caught up in this bewildering incident.
The scuffle had its consequences. The Confederation of African Football slapped the Royal Moroccan Football Federation with a hefty fine of $200,000 (167,000 euros). Yet, Hervé Renard, a seasoned coach with two Africa Cup of Nations titles under his belt (2012 with Zambia and 2015 with Ivory Coast) and currently at the helm of Saudi Arabia's national team, urges for a deeper understanding of the situation.
In an interview with Colinterview, the French coach offered a cultural lens to interpret the events. «The towel, it means something. If someone wanted to take it away, it's to disrupt... There's something behind it. Was the towel blessed? These are beliefs. They are important in Africa too. It's not just about taking a towel; there's more to it,» he explained.
«People who don't know Africa can't understand,» he continued, while conceding he wasn't privy to all the specifics. «There might have been nothing. But there was certainly a reason.» For Renard, this incident underscores «the unique characteristics» of a continent he is intimately familiar with, thanks to his previous successes coaching African teams.
