FIFA will examine a proposal to expand the 2030 World Cup to 64 teams, FIFA president Gianni Infantino said in an interview with Swiss outlet Bluewin.

The proposal would be considered after the 2026 World Cup and, if approved, would see the tournament, jointly hosted by Morocco, Spain and Portugal, with centenary opening matches in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay, feature 16 additional teams.

Infantino defended the idea by arguing that «every nation should be able to dream of playing in the World Cup» and described the expanded 48-team format introduced in 2026 as a «100% success». He pointed to the improved competitiveness of teams from all continents, noting that nine African teams reached the knockout stage.

According to Le Monde, FIFA expects the current World Cup cycle to generate around $13 billion in revenue.
