The parents of a seven-year-old girl who was swept out to sea in Casablanca in late January have said that, after weeks of searching, they may soon be forced to end the physical search.
Inaayah Makda, from England, was sitting on rocks at Lalla Meryem beach in Casablanca when a large wave struck, knocking her and her parents, Zubair and Tasneem, into the water. Her parents lost sight of her as she was swept away. Despite extensive search efforts involving Moroccan authorities, specialist diving units, naval patrols, volunteers, and independent ground teams organized by the family, she has not been found.
In their latest statement, her parents said: «It has now been 25 days since our beloved daughter, Inaayah, went missing at sea in Casablanca, Morocco. This continues to be the most painful and unimaginable time of our lives».
«We continue to explore every possible avenue. However, we recognize there may come a time when we must make the heartbreaking decision to conclude the physical search and place our trust fully in Allah’s decree», the statement added.
The family said it was deeply grateful for the «support and generosity» shown to them, noting that Moroccan authorities continue shoreline searches, underwater dive operations, and naval patrols.
The family said volunteers «refused to accept payment, a kindness we will never forget». GoFundMe donations, now exceeding £61,000, have funded private boat hire, aerial support, independent search teams, and essential family expenses while they remain in Morocco.
The parents added that any remaining funds would be used for charitable causes in Inaayah’s name and asked the public to «continue to keep Inaayah and our family in your prayers».
The UK Foreign Office has confirmed it is supporting the family and remains in contact with local authorities.
