The United Nations responded Tuesday evening to questions about the Western Sahara discussions held on February 23 and 24 in Washington.

«I can tell you that our colleague Staffan de Mistura, the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General for Western Sahara, is co-chairing ongoing negotiations on implementation of Security Council resolution 2797, passed last year. Those talks are ongoing in Washington, D.C., with Ambassador Michael Waltz as the other co-chair. In order to give these negotiations the best chance for success, Mr. de Mistura plans to remain mum for the time being», the spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General said at the start of Tuesday’s press briefing.

When pressed by journalists for more details, the spokesperson remained cautious. «I can’t give you how long it’s going to last. It’s the same people, my understanding is, the same people that attended the discussions in Madrid», held on February 8 and 9.
