Dutch-Moroccan footballer Anwar El Ghazi has once again won his legal battle against German club FSV Mainz 05, after a German court rejected the club’s latest appeal over his 2023 dismissal.
El Ghazi was sacked shortly after joining Mainz following public statements in support of Palestine made after October 7. He challenged the decision, arguing the termination was unlawful, a claim upheld by German labor courts, which ruled the dismissal invalid. Despite multiple appeals, the ruling has now been confirmed.
They tried again and they failed again. No, I’m not talking about the decades of repeatedly failed genocidal attempts to wipe out the Palestinians, but rather the ludicrous and pathetic attempts by FSV Mainz 05 to yet again appeal against their loss of my case in the German…

Announcing the decision on Thursday, the 30-year-old, now playing in Qatar, said: «They tried again and they failed again… the ludicrous and pathetic attempts by FSV Mainz 05 to yet again appeal against their loss… only to lose again.»
«Today, the German courts dismissed the latest appeal… ensuring justice was served with my resounding victory», he added, calling on the club to pay the remainder of his contract, noting that «worthy causes supporting the children of Gaza await».
A vocal supporter of the Palestinian cause during the war in Gaza, El Ghazi, in a previous ruling against Mainz, used €500,000 in compensation from his former club to support Palestinian children in the Gaza Strip. He was also among around fifty athletes, including fellow international Hakim Ziyech, to sign a petition urging UEFA to suspend Israel from all competitions over what they described as «genocide» in Gaza.
