Dutch-Moroccan footballer Anwar El Ghazi announced on Friday that he had donated 500,000 euros to help Palestinian children in the Gaza Strip, following compensation from his former club Mainz. In December 2023, the German club terminated his contract due to his support for Palestine amid the ongoing conflict with the Israeli occupation.
Last month, the labor court in Mainz overturned the club's decision. «After receiving my compensation today, I want to make it clear that my legal battle with the club was never about money», the player wrote on his Instagram page. «I would like to take this moment to thank Mainz for two things. Firstly, for the substantial financial pay off, 500,000 euros of which will be used to fund projects for the children in Gaza», he added.
In his post, Anwar El Ghazi stated that «despite their repeated failed attempts to avoid making the due payment», he hopes they now realize that they have indirectly contributed, through him, to improving the lives of Gaza’s children. «Secondly, in attempting to silence me, making my voice even louder for the oppressed and voiceless in Gaza», the player further remarked.
Following his dismissal, Anwar El Ghazi previously reaffirmed on social media that he had no regrets about his stance. «Standing up for what’s right means standing up for it even when you’re alone. Losing my livelihood is nothing compared to the hell being unleashed on innocent people in Gaza», he insisted.
As part of the summer transfer window, the player joined English club Cardiff City.
