The Polisario is opposing the proposed strategic review of MINURSO’s mandate, examined by the UN Security Council on April 23 and 30 in accordance with Resolution 2797, adopted on October 31, 2025. Bachir Mustapha Sayed, the Polisario’s «parliament speaker», warned on Monday night that «any change to MINURSO’s prerogatives would only fuel escalation and instability in the region».
The Front has previously accused the UN mission and the Security Council of being «part of the problem» and of «serving Morocco’s interests». Relations between the movement led by Brahim Ghali and MINURSO remain strained, particularly as the Polisario continues to prevent peacekeepers from accessing observation posts east of the Sand Wall.
Before the statement by the brother of the Polisario’s founder, who has reportedly been engaged for several weeks in an undeclared electoral campaign across the Tindouf camps ahead of the movement’s next congress, several Sahrawi media outlets had already expressed concern over MINURSO’s March 2025 decision to reduce its personnel.
The move was viewed by those outlets as a first step toward abandoning the «political settlement of the Western Sahara issue».
