Moroccan olive oil continues to strengthen its position in European markets after exports to Spain recorded a notable rise this season. According to data from Spain’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Business, Morocco’s olive oil exports to the Spanish market rose at an unprecedented pace during the first two months of the current year, climbing from just 55.21 tonnes in the same period last year to 2,963.83 tonnes.
The figures also showed that the start of the agricultural season, from October to December, saw a significant increase in Spain’s imports of Moroccan olive oil, which reached 1,429.97 tonnes, compared with only 730.83 tonnes during the same period of the previous season, an increase of nearly 100%.
This rapid growth has enabled Morocco to make a major leap in the ranking of olive oil suppliers to Spain, moving from tenth place a year ago to fourth place currently. Its share of the Spanish market has risen from 2.01% to 7.48%, more than tripling in size.
The Moroccan Interprofessional Olive Federation had forecast last September that Morocco’s olive oil production this season would reach around 200,000 tonnes, compared with approximately 90,000 tonnes in the previous season.
