The Republican Left of Catalonia has demanded answers from the Spanish government regarding its stance on the killing of three Polisario Front militia members in a drone strike linked to Morocco. This will be addressed in a parliamentary oversight session on Wednesday in Spain’s Congress of Deputies.
MP Francesc-Marc Álvaro is set to question Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares on what the party terms the government’s «failure to condemn» the attack and to explain the rationale behind this position.
Last week, Sumar, a junior coalition partner, urged Albares to summon Morocco’s ambassador to Spain, Karima Benyaich, to the Foreign Ministry to seek explanations for the June 7 incident. It also criticized what it called the government’s «double standards», pointing out that Madrid had previously condemned Polisario attacks on Smara in May.
The Spanish left’s accusations of double standards consider that the Polisario attack involved targeting civilian neighborhoods in Smara with three projectiles. Meanwhile, the recent incident involved three Polisario militia members, including Lahbib Abdelaziz, son of former leader Mohamed Abdelaziz, allegedly killed while aiming to attack the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces, as per the separatist group’s account.
Government scrutiny is not limited to the Sahara issue. Additional questions regarding foreign policy are expected. Cayetana Álvarez de Toledo, deputy spokesperson for the People's Party’s parliamentary group, will ask the foreign minister to clarify whose interests are being served by Spain’s foreign policy towards Morocco.
In recent months, Spain’s parliament has seen intense debates between Albares and the Popular Party over foreign policy. The minister has accused the conservatives of publicly denouncing the government’s Sahara stance while supposedly sending “envoys” to Morocco to back that very position behind closed doors.
