Morocco is likely to be entrusted with the organization of the world athletics championships in 2025. It is expected that an African country will host the World Championships of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) , according to Hamad Kalkaba Malboum, president of the Confederation of African Athletics, reports Inside the Games.
According to him, six African countries are likely to host this high-mass sports : Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa.
Hamad Kalkaba Malboum said Sebastian Coe, the IAAF president, supported the project and hoped for a change in perception of Africa, but stressed that the continent carries greater security risks than other countries.
In fact, no African country has ever hosted the world athletics championships, despite the enormous success of the continent's athletes.
«Some politicians often oppose sporting events but it can really help in raising the visibility of a country», said the president of the African Athletics Confederation. «We think that 2023 will come too early for Africa, but in 2025 we have a real chance.»
