El Othmani : A strategy will be adopted by the government to fight against sexual harassment

Prime Minister Saadeddine El Othmani promised during the weekly government council held on Thursday that the government will adopt a strategy to tackle sexual harassment following the incident that shook the country earlier this week.

A mentally challenged girl was sexually assaulted by a group of teenagers on a bus in Casablanca. The assault was filmed and published on the internet. The video emerged quickly creating a wave of anger on social media and among Moroccans.

Responding to the outraging situation, El Othmani commented during the council saying that the government is : «considering how to deal with this kind of phenomenon so that such acts do not happen anymore».

He also thanked and saluted the authorities that quickly reacted to the video and urged into arresting the suspected assailants. El Othmani, moreover shed light on the way internet users and civil society dealt with the assault video galvanizing others into condemning the horrible act. He then added that «the strategy to be adopted will be announced at the appropriate time».

For the record, six teenagers aged between 15 and 17 were arrested on Monday 21st of August following the emergence of the infamous video. Hundreds of people took the streets on Wednesday in Casablanca and Rabat to protest against sexual harassment and rape.
