Attendees at the African Union – European Union summit, a two-day international meeting held in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, denounced on Wednesday the inhuman treatment of migrants in Libya.

The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres has condemned the «abject» treatment that migrants in Libya have experienced, calling on states to manage the migration issue in a way that compiles with the international law.

He added that legal migrants make a valuable contribution to the economic development of both host countries and those of origin, insisting that «we can not end the tragedy of young people who die in the sea without providing a dignified life for them back home».

For his part, the Ivorian President, Alassane Ouattara has spoken out against the situation of sub-Saharans in Libya, urging the international community to take firm measures and to put an end to the problem.

On the other hand, Donald Tusk, president of the European Council has described what is happening in Libya as «scary», insisting that the situation «requires assistance».

For the record, hundreds of Moroccan migrants are also jailed in Libya.
