Morocco's 2026 bid committee announced Friday that it is hiring former German footballer Lothar Matthäus as an ambassador, says a communiqué sent to Yabiladi.

The new ambassador will work on promoting the Moroccan bid for the 2026 World Cup. Lothar Matthäus is currently a manager, after captaining West Germany to victory in the 1990 FIFA World Cup, he was named European Footballer of the Year, says the same source.

Matthäus has participated in five FIFA World Cups and four European Championships. By serving an ambassadorial role for the Moroccan 2026 World Cup bid, he joins other football figures chosen to represent the Kingdom ahead of the vote scheduled for June, namely Roberto Carlos, Mustapha Hadji, Mehdi Benatia, El Hadji Diouf, Daniel Amokachi and Lakhdar Belloumi.

«I am convinced that Morocco, with its innovative and compact concept, will offer impeccable conditions for players, supporters and football lovers», he said.
