About 20 Spanish teachers from 11 schools in the education section of the Spanish Embassy in Morocco decided to return to their home country at the start of the coronavirus crisis.
According to El Español, around ten of them have been dismissed for «abandoning their posts», while the others are awaiting their official notice of dismissal. «They will be penalized and for three years they will not be able to return to work in Morocco», the same source reported.
The latter recalls that with the Covid-19 pandemic, schools in Morocco closed on March 16, while teachers were called to work remotely from home. Some Spanish teachers had asked the Spanish Embassy in Rabat, in writing, to work from Spain due to health concerns.
In the absence of a response, according to some of them, they decided to return to Spain before the borders were completely closed and to continue to work from home.
El Español recalls that 325 Spanish teachers work in the eleven Spanish schools in eight cities in Morocco, around 80 of which are working on a temporary basis. «Hundreds of students will be affected by these layoffs. In addition, with closed borders, it will be impossible to find substitutes», the media concludes.
