In recent years, numerous international powers have shifted their position and publicly affirmed support for Morocco’s 2007 autonomy plan for the Sahara. Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for the Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, continues efforts to revive stalled negotiations between the parties.
Long before the creation of the Algerian state on July 5, 1962, and that of the Polisario in Libya, Tangier hosted the first meeting of the Committee of 24 outside UN headquarters in New York in May 1962. This was followed by the inclusion of the Sahara issue on the agenda of the C24 in 1963, at the initiative of the Kingdom.
