The 74th session of the UN General Assembly is no exception to the rule. To Morocco and Algeria, this year’s international event is another opportunity for the two neighboring countries to separately drum up support for the Western Sahara issue.
In 1981, King Hassan II of Morocco flew to the Kenyan capital to participate in an Organization of African Unity summit. In Nairobi, he announced that Morocco is ready to agree to a referendum on the self-determination of the Sahara. Three years later, the continental organization said yes to the «Sahrawi Republic’s», bid to join it as a full member.
The Polisario Front has not been one of the priorities set up by the Algerian lobbyists in the United States. This has been witnessed after the statements published by the Wall Street Journal’s recent article on the Sahara.
The same Brahim Ghali who summoned members of the Polisario General Secretariat to «prepare for war against Morocco», spoke about peace at the 10th edition of the Sahrawi summer university in Boumedres.
In Algeria, «sovereign authorities» are studying alongside academics and specialists the possibility of reopening the land border separating Morocco from their country. But a concrete decision related to the issue would be delayed by presidential election.
