The draft UN resolution on the Western Sahara issue, presented by the United States, has caused a political upheaval within the Polisario Front. In response, the Front quickly announced the «expansion» of its proposal, which it had initially submitted in 2007 as a counter to the Moroccan autonomy initiative, despite not being prompted to do so by any party.
The United States has submitted a draft resolution to the UN Security Council supporting Morocco's autonomy plan for Western Sahara, increasing pressure on the Polisario Front and Algeria to resume negotiations. While the text is backed by Western powers, Algeria is counting on a possible Russian veto, despite recent diplomatic tensions between Algiers and Moscow.
As Morocco is invited to outline the details of its autonomy plan for Western Sahara, Paris has suggested that Rabat take inspiration from the governance model applied in French Polynesia since 1984.
