During the 75th session of the UN General Assembly, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune said he regretted the obstacles preventing the settlement of the Western Sahara conflict. The other allies of the Polisario, including South Africa, Namibia and Botswana, have also raised the question of the Sahara.
The Polisario Front is threatening once again to withdraw from the UN-led political process, after the Security Council held a closed meeting on the Sahara conflict.
During an official visit to the Maghreb, the US Assistant Secretary Bureau of Political-Military Affairs was met with Algeria’s concerns about potential shifts in the US position on Western Sahara.
After the Algerian Foreign Minister replied to the critical comments of his Moroccan counterpart, the Western Sahara issue moves back to center stage in Algeria. However, Algeria stressed that it is «not adding fuel to fire».
After a diplomatic truce that lasted for a year, Morocco seems to have reviewed its policy towards Algeria.
In a reassuring statement, UN Secretary-General said that a «selection process is under way» to appoint a new personal envoy. Antonio Guterres’ words come as the Polisario has threatened to abandon the political process.
