After it recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara, the US ambassador to Morocco said that his country continues to support the UN political process on the dispute, pressing for the appointment of a new Personal Envoy.
During the 75th session of the UN General Assembly, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune said he regretted the obstacles preventing the settlement of the Western Sahara conflict. The other allies of the Polisario, including South Africa, Namibia and Botswana, have also raised the question of the Sahara.
The Polisario Front is threatening once again to withdraw from the UN-led political process, after the Security Council held a closed meeting on the Sahara conflict.
During an official visit to the Maghreb, the US Assistant Secretary Bureau of Political-Military Affairs was met with Algeria’s concerns about potential shifts in the US position on Western Sahara.
