Morocco’s military operation in Guerguerate addressed by the Irish Parliament

The Polisario’s allies within the Irish Parliament questioned the country’s Foreign Affairs Minister on the latest developments in Guerguerate.

Replying to the question of Deputy John Brady, from the Sinn Féin party, the Irish Foreign Minister said, Tuesday, that he is «concerned by the reports of an exchange of gunfire between Polisario and Royal Moroccan Army (RMA) positions in the buffer zone at Guerguerat, on the border with Mauritania, on Friday 13 November. We have not seen any confirmed reports of any casualties».

Simon Coveney reminded MPs that the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy met on Sunday, November 15, with the Foreign Ministers of Morocco and Algeria. On this occasion, Josep Borrell stressed the «importance of complying with the terms of the 1991 ceasefire agreement and reiterated the EU’s support for the United Nations Mission in Western Sahara (MINURSO), which includes two members of our Defense Forces», Coveney said.

The Irish foreign minister insisted that his country «supports the right to self-determination of the people of Western Sahara».

The Republic of Ireland was elected a non-permanent member of the Security Council. Its mandate will begin on January 1, 2021 and will end on December 31, 2022.
