Morocco joined, Friday, the Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA), a global initiative to accelerate the fossil-fuel phase out of coal-fired power stations, Reuters reported.
Morocco «will work together with the PPCA to develop a plan for phasing (coal) out», PPCA said in a statement.
60 governments have joined PPCA so far. At the COP 28 climate summit, the United States, the UAE, the Czech Republic, Cyprus, Dominican Republic, Iceland, Kosovo, Malta and Norway joined the body, Reuters added.
For the record, Morocco wants to increase the share of renewable energy in its energy mix to more than half by 2030. Currently, around 70% of the Kingdom’s electricity is generated from coal.
