Ahead of the Atlas Lions' match against Zambia, Morocco's national team coach Walid Regragui addressed concerning reports in a press conference on Tuesday. He revealed having received serious threats and accusations of racism following the post-match incident with DR Congo on Sunday.

«Some have even accused me of racism against the Congolese captain, Chancel Mbemba», Regragui stated, firmly denying the claims. «This is untrue and goes against my principles».

He confirmed receiving threatening messages and expressed concern for his family's well-being due to the online and media accusations of racial slurs against Mbemba.

«This is unacceptable», Regragui emphasized. «I am defending my reputation, built over years. I have faced racist remarks myself, and even death threats»

He reiterated his innocence: «I did not insult or address the player with racist words. It's against my values. I merely wanted to greet him and said, 'Look at me when you greet me.' His reaction was harsh, but the situation de-escalated».

The coach expressed disappointment over the ongoing repercussions. «I won't accept being wrongfully accused of racism. We had a moment of tension, but it was resolved».

Regragui further highlighted the need for unity in Africa. «While our continent shone at the World Cup, within Africa, issues of race and color discrimination persist. This must be addressed for our continent to progress. Much of what was said after the match was false».
