Morocco thwarts over 75K irregular migration attempts in 2023

Morocco successfully thwarted 75,184 attempts of irregular migration in 2023, a 6% increase from the previous year, according to the Ministry of the Interior. Facing a persistent surge in migratory pressure, the Kingdom leveraged its robust border and coastal surveillance systems to effectively curb irregular arrivals.

Trafficking networks, a persistent concern, showed no signs of abating, with authorities dismantling over 419 such groups, a remarkable 44% increase compared to 2022.

Morocco's commitment to humane border management is evident in its sea rescue and assistance operations, which saw the rescuing of 16,818 migrants in 2023, a 35% increase from the previous year. These individuals received crucial support, including medical assistance, accommodation, and guidance.

Sebta and Melilla witnessed a commendable 62% decrease in attempted assaults compared to 2022, with only six incidents involving over 1,400 migrants. Additionally, 5,844 irregular migrants opted for voluntary returns to their countries of origin, a 62% increase facilitated with respect and dignity in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and diplomatic legations.
