A Moroccan diplomatic source said that Algeria's accusations that Rabat has confiscated properties belonging to it in Morocco are «baseless» and part of an «unjustified spirit of escalation».

The Moroccan diplomat, speaking to AFP, called the Algerian accusations «baseless», containing several false allegations and motivated by an «unjustified spirit of escalation».

According to the Moroccan source, the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs applied to the Algerian authorities in 2022 to purchase a building adjacent to the ministry's headquarters, on the grounds that it had remained vacant since the relocation of the Algerian embassy in Rabat, as part of a project to expand the ministry's offices.

«Morocco managed this project in all transparency and in constant communication with the Algerian authorities», the source added, noting that Algiers «responded» to the Moroccan request, but the process is «currently frozen, because Morocco does not act according to the logic of escalation».

The same source emphasized that the matter is not related to the headquarters of the Algerian embassy or the ambassador's residence, as advanced by the Algerian authorities, noting that the Moroccan Foreign Ministry has taken similar measures with other foreign diplomatic headquarters to expand its Ministry’s offices.

On Sunday, the Algerian Foreign Ministry accused Morocco in a statement of embarking on «a new escalatory phase in its provocative and hostile behavior towards Algeria, such as the recently registered project aimed at confiscating the premises of the embassy of the Algerian state in Morocco».

«The Algerian government will respond to these provocations with all the means it deems appropriate and will resort to all available legal means and methods, especially within the framework of the United Nations, in order to ensure that its interests are respected», the statement said.
